Tobii Tech improves workload by upwards of threefold with the help of OpticStudio

Tobii Tech, the world leader in eye tracking, is using OpticStudio to help accelerate its research and product development and redefine human-machine interactions.

We’re thrilled that Zemax customer Tobii Tech, the world leader in eye tracking, is using OpticStudio to help accelerate its research and product development and redefine human-machine interactions.

Tobii Tech’s charter is to develop pioneering technology, user-facing sensors, and other components—and integrate them into consumer electronics and other volume products. This includes Tobii devices like the Tobii Pro Glasses 2 wearable eye tracker and the Tobii Pro Nano research-grade eye tracker. It also includes many inventive OEM products, such as the VIVE Pro Eye VR headset from HTC and Dell’s Alienware Area 51-m gaming laptop, which is the first computer with Tobii’s new IS5 eye-tracking platform.

OpticStudio used for breakthrough eye-tracking products

The Tobii Tech team relies on OpticStudio for a wide range of projects, from research simulations to designs of plastic illumination lenses that are molded for mass production, cover solutions for protecting illumination or camera lenses, and OEM camera lenses, either shadow or parallel designs.  The team regularly uses tools like OpticStudio’s sequential and non-sequential modes in the same interface, dynamic CAD linking, and API automation. About the latter, Tobii Tech Key Engineer Richard Hainzl says, “API automation makes doing the same thing over and over again easier. The exact results are saved as well as images, and all in a nice format, simplifying post-processing.”

Twofold to threefold increase in workload capacity

Previously, prototyping was a time-intensive, iterative process for Tobii Tech. For each system they designed, they would need to build at least three prototypes, test the earlier ones, go back and correct errors, and do it all over again until they got it right. Richard Hainzl says now they only need to build a single prototype, thanks to the ability to do optics and mechanical housing in the same interface. This streamlined prototyping process has taken the company from three iterations to a single physical prototype that’s correct the first time, resulting in a twofold to threefold increase in workload capacity.
