Employee spotlight: 16 questions with Alessandra Croce

Employee spotlight: 16 questions with Alessandra Croce

Zemax is a great place to work—and that’s because of its people. This month, meet Alessandra Croce, Senior Optical Engineer.

  1. Briefly describe what you do all day.
My work changes weekly, if not daily (which is something I really like!). It can be any mixture of the following: writing specifications and coordinating work for upcoming features, attending trade shows and conferences, researching how to model specific applications in OpticStudio and sharing results with our userbase, delivering public and private training, reporting bugs and testing their fixes, as well as helping customers understand their OpticStudio simulations.

  2. What’s the best thing about your job?
It allows me to travel around the world, gain insights into upcoming technologies, meet many interesting people in the optics community, and help optical engineers shape the future.

  3. What’s the best thing about Zemax?
One thing I appreciate the most is being part of a company where good ideas are valued, no matter who they come from. Everyone can make a difference and have a positive impact on anything Zemax is focusing on. A great thing about working in engineering services, specifically, is the team spirit. I feel everyone really does their best to support other team members whenever needed. Despite any geographical or time-zone difference, you are never alone when facing difficulties.

  4. What does your workspace look like?
It’s pretty tidy and minimalist, I would say. I can’t concentrate in a messy environment. This is why anything that doesn’t require any immediate attention ends up in nearby drawers.

  5. Who is one of your role models and why?
My grandmother is surely one of my role models. Throughout her life she has had the courage to defy gender and social prejudices and live the life she thought was best for her and her family.

  6. What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?
Mainly bouldering or rope climbing, which are very addictive activities. When I manage to resist the urge to climb, I also really enjoy reading, cooking, and listening to live music.

  7. What inspires you?

  8. Fill in the blank: I once met…
Someone who had hitchhiked all the way from China to Europe

  9. Fill in the blank: I’d most like to have dinner with…
    Jorge Luis Borges

  10. If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?
    Time travel

  11. What is the song title that best describes your personality?
Any Colour You Like by Pink Floyd

  12. Best Star Wars villain?
    Jabba the Hutt, of course

  13. How would you most like to time travel?

  14. Favorite app?

  15. Favorite cause?

  16. What are five words of advice for others in your profession?
    Think, test, search, verify, ask.
